Coaching vs therapy

Relationship coaching vs couple therapy: which support do you need?

Relationship coaching, including this practice, focuses on identifying patterns, beliefs and behaviours in a currently functioning relationship and building practical awareness to change them — it is forward-focused, structured and time-bound. Couple or individual therapy is a clinical service, delivered by a licensed mental health professional, that can diagnose and treat mental health conditions, process trauma, and address issues requiring clinical intervention. If there is diagnosed depression, PTSD, active addiction, suicidal risk, or safety concerns such as violence or coercive control, therapy or emergency support is the appropriate starting point — not coaching. If the relationship is functioning but stuck in repeated patterns or disconnection without a clinical condition driving it, coaching can be the right fit — sometimes alongside therapy rather than instead of it.

Ask one direct question first

Is there a diagnosed mental health condition, an active safety risk, or addiction involved? If yes, start with or include a licensed therapist. If the honest answer is “we just keep having the same fight” or “we have drifted apart,” coaching may be the more direct fit.

Frequently asked

Questions we hear about this

Is this counselling, therapy or coaching?+

Coaching. It is not psychotherapy, does not diagnose mental health conditions, and does not replace clinical treatment when that is needed.

When should we seek therapy instead of coaching?+

When a diagnosed or suspected mental health condition, trauma, addiction or safety risk is present. See our Safety and Ethics policy for specifics.

Can we do coaching and therapy at the same time?+

Yes, many people do both — coaching on relationship pattern and implementation, therapy on clinical or individual mental health needs.

How do I know which one my situation needs?+

If there is a diagnosed condition, addiction, or safety concern, start with a licensed professional. If the relationship is stuck in a repeated pattern without those factors, coaching is a reasonable starting point.
